Tire load index chart
The load index is the number after the size (the 94 in 225/65R17 94H). It stands for the maximum load one tire can carry. Find yours below — the placard on your door jamb tells you the minimum your vehicle needs.
Values below are the standardized maximum loads per load index (pounds converted from kilograms; some US charts round to the nearest 5 lb). They do not tell you which tire your vehicle needs — use the placard and owner's manual, and the marking on your tire takes precedence.

Frequently asked questions
What does load index 94 mean?
A maximum load of 670 kg (1,477 lb) per tire, at the inflation pressure the standard specifies for that load. The loads your vehicle may carry are on its placard and in the owner's manual.
Why do LT tires show two numbers like 121/118?
The first is the load per tire in single fitment (1450 kg / 3197 lb for 121); the second is per tire when mounted in dual pairs on one axle (1320 kg / 2910 lb for 118).
Can I use a tire with a lower load index than the original?
Vehicle makers specify a minimum load capacity on the placard or in the owner's manual, and tires below it can be overloaded. A higher load index is not automatically a better choice either (it can come with different construction and pressures) — check with a qualified tire professional.
Does the load index depend on pressure?
Yes. The maximum load applies only at the inflation pressure specified for it in the tire standards; at lower pressures a tire carries less. For everyday driving use the pressure on your vehicle placard, and for other loads consult the tire manufacturer's load/inflation tables or a qualified tire professional.
